Salvete Discipuli et Parentes,
Today in Latin we reviewed the all subjunctive forms for Latin verbs as well as 4 old subjunctive uses and one new subjunctive use.
It is critical for the students to master this material and not let it slide. The exercises in the text this week are really useful in multiple ways so please encourage your students to do as many of them as possible while also practicing the subjunctive forms. The greatest value in doing the exercises will only occur if they are also checked and corrected until understanding occurs.
As the year continues we will learn additional uses of the subjunctive mood and it is important to fully understand and recognize each one as it comes so that confusion does not set in after there are quite a few to figure out.
I am not assigning a quiz this week in order to give the students time to practice all the exercises and to master the forms now.
If your students have time or interest, here is a link to an excellent introduction to Latin pronunciation. We have not touched on the rules of pronunciation this year or last although I believe all of them have had it in Latin's Not So Tough. I am working on increasing the emphasis on oral Latin because I believe this will encourage the students and strengthen their Latin abilities.
Vincamus simul Latinam Linguam.
Valete,

Helpful Latin Links from Magistra Skwarek!
I am including links to some Highschool Latin class lectures
that someone else is giving that have helpful songs for memorizing the pronoun
forms. These lectures though could also be useful as a review if your
child is unsure about the subject. This teacher covers a number of topics
that we have studied or will study and they might find other items she has done
to be useful in reviewing weak areas.

You can find additional offerings by this woman by clicking on her name. There are several relating to the material we studied today.
In addition, these links can be helpful for quizzing the forms that are to be learned (relearned) this week.

Hello!
We are meeting
Tuesday, October 2, only Challenges. We
will have Latin 1st!!!
Please
mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 7. This will be our Museum Field Trip with the Baton Rouge Challenge II. It has been listed on the calendar on the
portal (my first blog entry).
Art grant
presentation –
I will introduce this project Tuesday and hopefully have a sample to show you. It
is due Week
10. See guide page 46 and 47
for instructions.
I
will have a grade sheet for each of you from the Debate
we had last Tuesday.
IEW writing helps. I am attaching in the email an IEW reference
guide. This is really handy for the
lists of ly words, adverbs, strong verbs, and quality adjectives, etc. It works a lot like a synonym finder. Even if you haven’t used IEW, this is
extremely helpful in dressing up your papers.
Have a great weekend! -Mrs. Ashley

Latin Update
Salve,
Here is a quick update on class today and plans for the week. We are working on Lesson 3 this week. Last week we worked on Lessons 1 and 2. Today we were able to translate a paragraph together found on p. 318 of Henle II.
I will be following the Challenge II guide closely this year as to scheduled homework items. The students are to use the weekly Latin schedule sheets sent home last week (paper copy) and also attached to one of the emails that went out last week. to organize their Latin studies for the week. They may need some help at first planning out how to complete the items listed in the Challenge guide over the course of the week.
In addition to the items listed in the Challenge guide, I did add two additional items. I sent home an article discussing a method of translation which I would like them to read and be ready to discuss for next class. I also sent home a quiz on Lessons 1 and 2. It is my desire that they look at the Quiz today or tomorrow so that they understand what the quiz will be like and what it is covering, but that they then give it to you, their parent, for safekeeping until Monday when they will take it at home. Completed quizzes should be returned to me for grading on Tuesday. Note, this may seem like a huge addition but the Challenge Guide has not actually scheduled ANY assessments except for the midterm and final. I think it would be remiss to wait until then to give the students an assessment.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback that you or your student has. 215-385-6975 or uscgrower@earthlink.net
Thanks so much,
Ruth Skwarek

Supplemental Henle Answer Key
Salve,
Quid agis? Sum bene. Gauderam scholae tuae hodie.
Here is the link to the supplemental Henle answer key. Unfortunately it is on back order. But I would still go ahead and place the order. We could even do a group order if you are interested. Unfortunately it is pricey at $35 but it is useful for Henle 1 and 2 for those who have siblings in the other book.
